What Does the Bible Say About Poverty?

The Bible addresses poverty in various contexts, emphasizing both the reality of poverty and the responsibility of the community to care for the poor. In the Old Testament, laws were established to protect the rights of the poor, such as the gleaning laws in Leviticus 19:9-10, which instructed landowners to leave the edges of their fields unharvested for the needy. Additionally, Proverbs 19:17 highlights that helping the poor is akin to lending to the Lord, suggesting that acts of kindness toward those in need are valued by God.

In the New Testament, Jesus speaks about poverty in both a physical and spiritual sense.
