Ater is the name of the ancestors of two families who returned from exile, and of a man named in Nehemiah. The first is Ater of Hezekiah, whose descendants number ninety-eight in the lists of returnees (Ezra 2:16; Nehemiah 7:21). The second Ater heads a family of porters, or gatekeepers.
His descendants are listed with the children of Shallum, Talmon, Akkub, Hatita and Shobai, totalling one hundred thirty-nine in Ezra and one hundred thirty-eight in Nehemiah (Ezra 2:42; Nehemiah 7:45). Nehemiah also names an Ater next to Hizkijah and Azzur (Nehemiah 10:17). This may be the family of Ater of Hezekiah, but the verse does not say so.
