Several men in the Bible are named Eleazar. The best known is Eleazar son of Aaron, nephew of Moses and Israel's second high priest (1 Chronicles 6:3). His mother was Elisheba daughter of Amminadab, and his brothers were Nadab, Abihu and Ithamar (Exodus 6:23).
He married one of the daughters of Putiel, who bore him Phinehas (Exodus 6:25). He was set apart with his father and brothers to minister in the priest's office (Exodus 28:1). After Nadab and Abihu died for offering strange fire, Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests (Numbers 3:4).
Eleazar was chief over the chiefs of the Levites and oversaw the tabernacle, its oil, incense and vessels (Numbers 3:32; 4:16). On mount Hor, Moses put Aaron's garments on Eleazar, and Aaron died there (Numbers 20:28). Eleazar then ministered in the priest's office in his father's place (Deuteronomy 10:6).
With Moses he numbered Israel in the plains of Moab (Numbers 26:63). Joshua was commissioned before him, and Eleazar was to ask counsel for Joshua by the judgment of Urim (Numbers 27:21-22). Numbers names him with Joshua to divide the land (Numbers 34:17), and the book of Joshua records that they distributed the inheritances by lot at Shiloh (Joshua 14:1; 19:51).
He died and was buried in a hill belonging to Phinehas in mount Ephraim (Joshua 24:33). The priest Zadok was of his descendants (1 Chronicles 24:3).
