Who was Enosh?
Son of Seth in whose days men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
The story of Enosh
Enosh is the son of Seth and grandson of Adam, listed among the earliest generations of humanity. In the King James Version his name is spelled Enos in Genesis and Luke and Enosh in 1 Chronicles. Genesis records that Adam's wife bore Seth after the death of Abel (Genesis 4:25), and that a son was born to Seth whom he named Enos.
The same verse adds that men then began to call upon the name of the LORD (Genesis 4:26). The text places this in the time of Enosh's birth but does not say that Enosh himself was the first to do so. In the genealogy of Genesis 5, Seth is 105 years old when Enosh is born (Genesis 5:6).
Enosh is 90 when he fathers Cainan (Genesis 5:9). He lives another 815 years and has other sons and daughters (Genesis 5:10), and he dies at the age of 905 (Genesis 5:11). The Chronicler opens his genealogies with the line Adam, Sheth, Enosh (1 Chronicles 1:1).
Luke's genealogy of Jesus traces the line back through Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam (Luke 3:38).
