Who was Heber?

The story of Heber

Several men in the Bible are named Heber. One is a son of Beriah, the son of Asher, who went down to Egypt with Jacob's family (Genesis 46:17). He heads the family of the Heberites (Numbers 26:45) and is the father of Japhlet, Shomer, Hotham and their sister Shua (1 Chronicles 7:31-32).

Another is Heber the Kenite, a descendant of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses. He separated from the other Kenites and camped near Kedesh, and his house was at peace with Jabin king of Hazor (Judges 4:11, 17). His wife Jael killed Sisera in her tent and is praised in Deborah's song (Judges 4:21; 5:24).

A third Heber is a son of Jehudijah and the father of Socho (1 Chronicles 4:18). Chronicles also lists a Heber among seven kinsmen of a family house (1 Chronicles 5:13), and the name appears in two separate lists of sons in 1 Chronicles 8 (1 Chronicles 8:17; 8:22). In Luke's genealogy of Jesus, Heber is the son of Sala and the father of Phalec (Luke 3:35).
