Context: Psalms 44

22Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

24Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

25For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

26Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

Commentary

The book of Psalms is a collection of prayers and songs that express a range of human emotions and experiences in relationship to God. Psalm 44 is no exception, as the psalmist speaks candidly to God about their deep pain and confusion. Yet, what makes this psalm unique is the unwavering trust in God's goodness, despite the circumstances. The psalmist is not afraid to bring their doubts and struggles to God, while also remembering His faithfulness in the past. This psalm challenges us to do the same - to bring our pain and doubts to God, while also holding onto the truth of His character and promises.
