Adar in the Bible
Ezra records that the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem was finished on the third day of Adar in the sixth year of King Darius (Ezra 6:15). In Esther, the lot (Pur) cast before Haman falls on the twelfth month, Adar (Esther 3:7). Letters are then sent to destroy all Jews on the thirteenth day of Adar (Esther 3:13).
On that day the situation is reversed, and the Jews gain the upper hand over their enemies (Esther 9:1). The Jews in Shushan also fight on the fourteenth (Esther 9:15). The fourteenth and fifteenth days of Adar are then established to be kept every year with feasting, gladness and the sending of portions to one another (Esther 9:17, Esther 9:19, Esther 9:21).
Separately, Adar is a place on the south border of Judah's territory, named between Hezron and Karkaa (Joshua 15:3).
