About Exodus 13: Firstborn Males

God commands that the Israelites are to set apart all firstborn males for him.
Commentary
Exodus 13 is a chapter that focuses on the importance of the firstborn in the Israelite community. It begins with God instructing Moses to consecrate all the firstborn of the Israelites, both man and beast, to Him. This is a reminder of the great deliverance God had provided for the Israelites when He passed over the firstborn of the Egyptians during the tenth plague. The Lord then commands Moses to set aside the firstborn of the donkey and to redeem it with a lamb. This is a reminder of the price of redemption and the need for a substitute to take the place of the firstborn.
