Context: Numbers 31
49And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.
50We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.
51And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.
52And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53(For the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)

God commands the Israelites to destroy the Midianites and Moses is angry with the officers for sparing the women.
Commentary
In Numbers 31, the Lord instructs Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites for their role in leading the Israelites astray. The Lord commands Moses to take a thousand men from each of the twelve tribes of Israel and to go to war against the Midianites. Moses follows the Lord's instructions and leads the Israelites in a successful battle against the Midianites. After the battle, Moses and the Israelites return with the spoils of war, including the women and children of the Midianites.
