Context: Joshua 22

19Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD'S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.

21Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

22The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)

About Joshua 22: The Altar on the Jordan

Joshua 22: The Altar on the Jordan

Joshua reminds the Israelites to obey God's commandments and reminds the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh of their agreement to help the other tribes conquer the Promised Land before settling in their own allotted land.

Commentary

Joshua 22 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Joshua, as it marks the end of the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land. After the death of Moses, Joshua had led the Israelites in a successful campaign to take possession of the land promised to them by God. Now, with the land conquered, the Israelites are preparing to return to their own tribes and lands on the east side of the Jordan River.
